In the simplest of terms, Poshmark is an app where both men and women can buy and sell new or pre-owned clothing in a few easy steps. In a more broad sense, Poshmark is a community of both men and women who love fashion, and who are incredibly supportive of each other.
I first came across the app back in 2013 as I was scrolling on Facebook one morning and I saw an ad with the Poshmark logo on it and it said “Poshmark: buy and sell fashion.” I’ve always been into fashion, so I clicked on it, and that was the beginning of my reselling journey. I learned that I could sell my old my used clothing, yes the tons of clothing items I had sitting in my closet that had been worn once or never at all. I was a really big compulsive buyer. I didn’t really think the idea of selling used clothes was weird because I had always bought clothing anywhere really, whether it be a store at the mall, a boutique, a thrift store, or even at a yard sale. As long as I liked it, it never really mattered to me, but I know the concept of purchasing used clothing from someone else is a little strange for some women to wrap their heads around. Like do we really want your used clothing???? YES WE DO! Especially if we’re gonna pay way less than retail!
Anyways, as soon as I was done making an account, I immediately had comments from women on the app welcoming me to the platform and letting me know that if I needed any help navigating through the app, to let them know and not to hesitate on asking any questions. It was very unusual, but heartwarming to be welcomed to an app.
I went on to list my first few items by simply using my phone and snapping some pictures, adding the size and category, a brief description, and a price. I don’t remember exactly how long it took for me to sell my very first item, but I will tell you that Poshmark makes it easier nowadays for users to sell their first item quickly because the algorithm favors new users for a little and even offers discounted shipping to the first person who purchases from your closet. The shipping process is SUPER easy. All you have to do is simply print out the label that is emailed to you once you make a sale, and place it on any box or envelope, and drop it off at USPS. You don’t even have to wait in line.
Throughout the years, Poshmark always allowed me to make extra money while I was working, and it’s amazing to see people who have really grown their reselling game part time and some who do this FULL TIME. It wasn’t until 2017 when I truly realized that this whole reselling thing had true potential, and I wish I had realized it earlier. I was 16 when I discovered the app, I’m 21 now, and fast forward 6 years later to 2019, I have so much to learn, but I’m so excited for the whole process. I’ve met so many amazing people through this app, and its a community very dear to my heart, but that will be reserved for another in depth post.
So for now, if you want to make extra money or simply get rid of some of your old clothes, I invite you to download the app and get started! Sign up with the code stja_ and you’ll get a $5 credit for your first purchase! I’ll get into the specifics on how to use the app in my next post!
